West Indies- Sri Lanka 3rd ODI washed out
Heavy showers forced the abandonment of the inconsequential third ODI between West Indies and Sri Lanka in St. Lucia. West Indies had already won the three-match series 2-0. Before the heavens opened up for the third time during the match and finally ended play, West Indies were 81 for 2 in reply to Sri Lanka’s 257 for 8. The home team were off to a flying start thanks to Sewnarine Chattergoon's brisk 46, but the Sri Lankan slow bowlers became increasingly difficult to deal with on a slow turf with uneven bounce.
Batting first, Sri Lanka recovered after a poor start to finish with 257 for 8. Half centuries from 21-year-old opener Mahela Udawatte (73) and Tillakaratne Dilshan (64) were mainly responsible for the revival of the Sri Lankan innings.
The West Indians fielded poorly on the slippery and damp surface caused by the showers, and it was Chris Gayle who kept the Sri Lankan batsmen on a leash to claim 2 for 41 in his 10 overs. Gayle, however, had to leave the field with a groin strain shortly after he finished his bowling stint. The series, which began with a lot of promise, ended unfortunately on a damp note.
