South Africa level series with innings victory
South Africa leveled the four-Test series 1-1 when they thrashed England by an innings and 74 runs in the fourth Test at Johannesburg on January 17. Needing 244 to make South Africa bat again, England were bundled out for 169 in their second innings.
For England, Paul Collingwood again was the only batsman who offered some resistance to the South African bowling attack. Collingwood made 71. Morne Morkell took 4 for 59, while debutant Wayne Parnell, Dale Steyn and JP Duminy claimed two wickets apiece.
In reply to England’s first innings score of 180, South Africa had declared their first innings at 423 for 7. Skipper Graeme Smith played a fine innings of 105 to record his 20th Test century. He was ably supported by Mark Boucher, who made 95 to reach 5,000 runs in Tests and Hasim Amla who scored 75. AB De Villiers also made a useful contribution of 58. Stuart Broad was the most successful bowler claiming 3 for 83. Graeme Swann and Ryan Sidebottom took two wickets each.
Earlier, Dale Steyn destroyed the England batting line-up by taking 5 for 51. Collingwood and Ian Bell scored 47 and 35 respectively. Morkell took 3 for 39.
Steyn and Morkell were jointly adjudged Man of the Match. The Man of the Series was also shared by Boucher and Swann.
