Pakistan clinch ODI series against Bangladesh

Pakistan clinched the ODI series against Bangladesh when they won the third match by 23 runs at Lahore. The victory gave Pakistan an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series.
In a welcome departure from the previous matches, the third one fought much more competitive in which the Bangladesh batsmen put up a decent show. Chasing a huge 309 for victory, the visitors went on to make 285 for 7 – a respectable score by any standards.

At some points of time, it appeared that the lowly Bangladesh could just cause an upset – but that was not to be. After the early exit of Shahriar Nafees, Tamim Iqbal and Aftab Ahmed added 90 in 13 overs. Tamim reached his half century in just 52 balls. After Tamim and Aftab were dismissed for 63 and 42 respectively, skipper Mohammad Ashraful was run out for 16 dealing a severe blow to the run chase. Shakib Al-Hasan, however, did not give up and top-scored with a plucky 75. In the end, a valiant run chase fell short by just 23 runs. It was Bangladesh’s highest score against Pakistan in ODIs.

Earlier, Pakistan piled up a mammoth 308 for 8 thanks mainly to brilliant centuries by Kamran Akmal (100) and Salman Butt (132). Akmal was at his devastating best to reach his century in only 81 deliveries, while his opening partner, Butt was more measured in his approach. Butt went on to register his career-best score in the innings. Pakistan's total could have been much higher but Bangladesh pulled matters back claiming three vital wickets in quick succession. With two inconsequential matches remaining, the home team may try a few changes with an eye on the future.
