Sachin Tendulkar

A player making debut in his teens is destined to be one of the greats of the game provided he can convert his potential into results on the ground. Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar is one such player who made his One-Day debut at the age of just over 16 and half years.
In 1992 when he played in his first World Cup, Sachin went on to amass 283 runs in eight matches at a healthy average of 47.16 with three half-centuries tough his highest score of 84 came in a losing cause against New Zealand.
Four years later in 1996, he was already being talked of as one of the all-time greats. India were considered one of the favourites to lift the trophy and Tendulkar with his blazing bat was touted as the player who would be the star. He did emerge as the star being the highest run accumulator with 523 runs in seven matches including two brilliant centuries and three half-centuries. Tendulkar ended the tournament with an average of 87.17 with the highest score of 137 (which incidentally again came in the loss against Sri Lanka).
However, for all his heroics with the bat the Tendulkar's World Cup dreams crashing down in the semis at the Eden Gardens when the match was awarded to Sri Lanka after riots erupted in the stands with India tottering at 120/8 chasing a target of 252.
The 1999 tournament in England, too, was not much to write about though Tendulkar showed tremendous grit and determination to score a century Kenya having returned just a few hours earlier from India after attending his father’s funeral.
Tendulkar’s big moment came in the 2003 tournament even though Team India were crushed under the Aussies in the final. Despite the failure in the final, Tendulkar was the top scorer and named the man of the series for his 673 runs at an average of 61.18 with one hundred and six fifties with the highest score of 152.
His 33 matches in the World Cup have seen him score 1732 runs at an average of 59.72 which is higher than his career average of 44.12. This clearly shows that he likes the big stage.
